Description
At age 23, Dave joined the legendary Oakland funk/soul group Tower of Power, replacing the original organist Chester Thompson. He toured with the band for two and a half years. Since 1990 Dave has been organist/pianist with Grammy Award winning queen of Rhythm & Blues, Etta James. He has appeared with her at most of the worlds' major jazz and blues festivals.
Dave has played on five of Etta's recordings,
- Life, Love and the Blues (Grammy Nominee)
- Heart of a Woman (Grammy Nominee)
- Matriarch of the Blues (Grammy Nominee)
- Burnin' Down the house - Live at the House of Blues DVD (Grammy Nominee)
- Let's Roll (2003 Grammy Winner)
- All the Way (Grammy Nominee)
Dave has appeared on international and U.S. television, radio, and video, including the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, the David Letterman Show, and Austin City Limits.
A lover of American Roots piano styles, from traditional midwestern ragtime, Harlem stride, all blues styles, gospel and jazz, he has performed as accompanist for multi-faceted singer, Maria Muldaur since 1989. Dave appears on her Telarc release, "Meet Me Where They Play The Blues," and her Grammy-nominated Stony Point release, " Richland Woman Blues" and her latest, "Sweet Lovin' Old Soul."
Ever eclectic, Mathews exercises his passion for Afro-cuban and Brazilian music through an association with Pete and Sheila Escovedo and Ray Obiedo since 1980.
In 1997, Dave released "Down With It," a live jazz/blues organ combo recording.
In 2000, he played on the Fabulous Thunderbirds Live Concert DVD, "Invitation Only."
In 2004, Dave released "The Coltrane Connection," accompanied by Larry Schneider, Barry Finnerty, and Deszon Claiborne.
